Design on a Dime #1

The average college student is poor. Student loans, weekend shenanigans, parent's cutting us off financially; we have no spare money. Look at our diets: ramen noodles, ramen noodles, and more ramen noodles. Satisfying both in the stomach and in the bank account. Okay I lied, not satisfying at all. If the dwindling digits on our accounts was not enough, we also have classes to worry about AND the ever important task of looking fly. Yes, I just you used the word fly. Don't hate.

Lucky for you readers, I too feel the strain of wanting to look stylishly fabulous while not breaking the bank. So here I present you with great spring ensembles at GREAT prices! Please don't jump up and down in your lecture hall seats with excitement, you might disrupt your painfully fascinating class on the homogeneous second order constant coefficient linear ordinary differential equation describing the harmonic oscillator. Oh boyyy, just typing that makes me want to study! Hmm...

This first post of styling designs for those of you on a dime is of great casual day outfits for spring. They're perfect for a walk in the park or a bite to eat al fresco.

Green God(dess)

Some of us may be blessed with a green thumb or a knack for saving a lot of green, but I think most of us may have the tendency to go for convenience rather than strive for a greener tomorrow.

Rewind, let me start with Happy Earth Day to all you readers out there. Every year this day makes me stop and think about the ways that I try to go green. I do the usual: recycle old water bottles and soda cans, eat the occasional organic food, and try to conserve gas by not driving without a certain and needed destination. Though these activities are better than nothing, there is still so much more than I can do and that you can do too!

Think of this Earth Day as the nouveau New Years. At the beginning of each year, we all plan to eat more healthy, hit the gym more frequently, or swear less often. Let's make a similar pledge this Earth Day to make a greener change in our lives whether it's turning off the lights in a room when it's not in use or carpooling to work.

If you want to become one of those green thumbed people, then start from the ground up. Perhaps plant your own organic herbs such as basil, sage, and cilantro or grow your own organic fruits and vegetables in your garden paradise. Personally, I envy those who can find their own personal escape in beautifully nurtured home gardens. I don't have the patience nor the desire to get covered in dirt or be among the birds and the bees (and no I'm not referring to that meaning. dirty minds.) So for those with the green thumb, more power to you!

Recycle. Reduce. Reuse. Everyone knows this common phrase, but how many actually follow its message? Got glass bottles, aluminum cans, old papers, empty water bottles, dated magazines? Recycle, recycle, recycle! Do you keep the water running when you brush your teeth? Reduce water waste by turning it off when brushing. Do you leave the lights on in a room when not in use? Reduce electricity waste by only using lights in a room when in use. Do you and a neighbor drive to the same workplace separately? Reduce car pollution by carpooling. Have a lot of plastic bags in that pantry closet. Reuse them as a trash bag, a bag to pick up dog "treats," a laundry bag when on vacation, a lunch bag, a donation to a food pantry, or as packing material for a package. Be creative and think of ways to reuse items laying around the house. You'll save money by using the things you already have.

Need an eco-chic ride? Hop on a bike! Not only will you save gas and save money, you'll keep in shape. Healthy = Happy.

While riding your bicycle to the grocery store, don't forget to bring your reusable grocery bag. Here are a couple of my favorites that are also available at great prices. Click on the image for more details.

Is your wardrobe lacking in the green department? And I don't mean the color green. Check out Eco Citizen, Ascension, Kind Boutique, and Beklina. You'll get that fashion fix without compromising your green campaign.

As you can see there are many ways to become more environmentally conscious. You don't have to be a part of the Sierra Club to become a green god or goddess, just someone willing to change a small part of their lifestyle in order to welcome a better tomorrow.

PS: For those in Atlanta check out this event tomorrow April 23 at the Georgia Institute of Technology:

Among the largest Earth Dayevents in the Southeast, the 13th annual event on April 23 is free and open to the public. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., attendees can learn about the environment and what they can do to develop a more sustainable lifestyle through eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, an office supply and clothing exchange and more than 70 exhibitors."

Sole Mates

I apologize for my slight blogging hiatus. I've been too preoccupied with reality. However, I've finally found a moment away from Atlanta apartment searching, Disney Pro Forma editing for a resort, and typical survival activities such as grocery shopping and laundry. So here I am. Its officially been 2 months since I've started my no clothing purchases for a year, and I'm still going strong. Quite the landmark moment!

...My shoe collection on the other hand has expanded. Though, I must say none of the shoes that I bought cost over $50, which is pretty dang good in my opinion. My attempts to stay fashionable while not breaking the bank will persist.

Here are my latest sole mates:
These two shoes will be great transition shoes throughout the seasons. They can be worn with shorts and skirts in the warmer months, and once a chill is in the air, pair them with tights or knit socks. Also, wear them with skinny jeans or a funky dress.

Sandals and oxfords like these will certainly be the hit this Spring and Summer. Grab a pair. Try interesting cuts and cool patterns. Don't think people won't look at your feet because they do. I mean how many people do you see walking around with their heads down texting on their phones? Lots. And what is all that they see while walking with their heads down? Shoes! Catch someone's eye with a statement pair of shoes. Maybe they'll take their eyes off their phone and give you a second look.

In Atlanta and want to take those eyes off the phone? Turn your attention to the Atlanta Film Festival going on April 15-23. It's a great way to support film artists seeking exposure in the indie film world. Visit atlantafilmfestival.com/index.php for schedule information, times and locations. Some screenings are free while others may have a small fee.

Oh Girl, You Are the Cat's Meow

When I was 16, I invested in a pair of Guess cat-eye sunglasses. I liked them a lot though they were hardly the trend at the time. You were cool if you had a pair of Jackie O-esque sunglasses with a large lens and frames in either black or white. A natural classic. Mine had small lenses, were far from a round shape, and were a dark tortoise shell color. The years passed and my lenses became scratched from everyday wear and tear bringing them to the point of replacement...and it's just my luck that cat-eye sunglasses are now in!

If you want to be the cat's meow, you must get your paws on a pair! Look at WhoWhatWear's Accessory Report with some celeb fashionistas and their stylish shades:

Here are my picks for cat-eye sunglasses for those of all budgets:

1) Vintage sunglasses from Etsy $12

2) Printed shades from Top Shop $30

3) Alexander Wang Cat-Eye Sunglasses $325

4) Emmanuelle Khanh Cat-Eye Acetate Sunglasses $640

While I ignore the scratches on my pair of cat-eyes, I will don the Audrey look of Breakfast at Tiffany's (one of my favorite movies) where she popularized said shades and put together a classic ensemble. LBD and pearls or diamonds should do the trick...with of course my chic cat-eye shades.

Meow.

No Peeps Please

Easter is tomorrow! It's a time to wear those pastel colors, gather with family, go on an Easter egg hunt, and if you're so kind, give loved ones personal Easter baskets filled with goodies.

If you happen to do the latter and are pressed for creative ideas to add to the baskets, I have a few suggestions! No more plastic eggs filled with jelly beans or packs of pencils with rabbits and chicks on them and certainly no more PEEPS! They may look cute and the first bite might be yummy, but those marshmallow things fall short of what a real marshmallow should taste like and after eating one, you'd be so lucky as to feel good enough to eat another. But hey, if you love them...well, let's just say someone has to keep their business going.

So without much further ado and talk about Peeps, here are some treats that will make your basket receivers have a big smile on their faces.

1) Clothing always makes a good gift:
Especially something as fun as this White Rabbit tee. Works for both males and females.

2) Make a bold gift with an interesting bowl:
These chick bowls are adorable. Perfect for food or as decoration.

3) For the ladies, jewelry shines on as a great gift:
Flower + Cameo. Enough said.

4) Cupcakes for the Easter sweet tooth:
People will love you for personally made treats.

5) And finally, what's Easter without an Easter egg?:
This Ukrainian hand painted egg is just too cute.

Hopefully, these spur some ideas, as you complete your last minute Easter shopping. Just remember to make the gifts fun and not commercial. No one really likes a gift that looks like it was picked up at the end of a grocery aisle.

Be creative. Happy Easter.
